I-CAR MIG WELDING IN SHOP PROGRAM

WELDING QUALIFICATION SERIES

Course Highlights

The Steel GMA (MIG) WeldingQualification Series

WCS03

Offered To: First time qualifiers or those whose qualifications have expired

Points: 8

Estimated Duration: 8 hours

Format: Classroom instruction, hands-on preparation, and hands-on test

Major collision damage requires a greater level of expertise to repair and welding is one of the most critical skills necessary in completing that repair safely. Poor welds can lead to part failure and reduced protection for the passengers in the vehicle. How well a technician performs welds — and even the condition of the welding equipment — impacts not only the structural integrity of the vehicle, but safety, as well.

The content in this course pertains to collision repair professionals and offers students a three-part, comprehensive experience that includes on-site instruction, hands-on practice, and is capped by the I-CAR Steel GMA (MIG) Welding Qualification Test.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

• Understand how to set up and tunea welding machine

• Explain safety issues involved withsteel welding

• Perform proper welding techniques

• Know how to properly prepare metal surfaces

• Identify and correct weld defects

Also Available

Steel GMA (MIG) Welding Re-qualification Tests

Requalification tests (without the instruction or hands-on practice) are available to those who have previously qualified and whose qualifications have not expired. The Welding Qualification will be renewed for an additional five years from the test date.

Steel GMA (MIG) Welding Re-Tests

Re-tests are available to students who do not pass any portion of the Welding Qualification Test. Re-tests must be completed within six months of the original test date.

Course Content

Classroom Instruction

Students will begin the course with an overview of course objectives along with a discussion that focuses on learning the principles and techniques of steel GMA (MIG) welding.

Hands-on Practice

Following the instructor-led training, students will apply their knowledge through practice with GMA (MIG) plug, fillet, butt joint with backing and open butt joint welds. Working with automotive-grade, 18 gauge, 60/60 electro-galvanized steel, participants will perform the four welds in both vertical and overhead positions and will learn how to visually inspect and destructively test their welds.

Steel GMA (MIG) Welding Qualification Test

The course is completed with the student taking the Steel GMA (MIG) Qualification Test in which he or she demonstrates the ability to perform the four welds in both vertical and overhead positions. All eight segments of the Welding Qualification Test must be passed in order to earn points. Students not passing all segments will have six months to re-test. The Welding Qualification remains active five years from test date.

Recommendations

This course covers the theory and practice of steel welding. The student should have an understanding of the collision repair process and know how to work safely when welding. The following I-CAR training programs are suggested:

• Fundamentals of Collision Repair (FCR01)

• Hazardous Materials, Personal Safety, and Refinish Safety (WKR01)
